India, along with China, Iraq and Qatar, has been exempted from restrictions on the movement of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian lawmaker has said.
However, Tehran has not officially communicated any such exemption to New Delhi, and there has been no change in the existing procedures for Indian ships transiting the strategic waterway, sources said.
Amir Hayat-Moghaddam, Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, reportedly told the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA) that vessels from the four countries were free to pass through the Strait of Hormuz despite the restrictions imposed by Tehran on shipping traffic.
He indicated in the interview, reported in local media, that the exemption for India was intended to facilitate imports of medicines from the country, while that for China was aimed at securing Beijing’s political support.
There is, however, no clarity on whether the Iranian government or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) endorsed the claim, sources said. “There is no clarity on the matter of exemption from navigation restrictions, and it is not known under what authority that statement was made. According to the Indian Mission (in Tehran), apparently there is no change in the current procedure,” a source tracking the matter told businessline.
The remarks come amid concerns over the movement of essential supplies to Iran, which has faced difficulties accessing medicines and other critical imports amid international sanctions and the ongoing conflict. India is a significant supplier of pharmaceutical products to Iran, and facilitating their movement through the Gulf is understood to be one of Tehran’s interests in maintaining trade links with New Delhi.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is a critical shipping route for global energy supplies. India has repeatedly called for unimpeded navigation through the waterway, which is important for its crude oil, LPG and LNG imports.
The Iranian lawmaker’s statement does not establish whether a formal exemption has been operationalised or whether it applies to all Indian-flagged vessels and cargoes. New Delhi is yet to receive an official communication from Tehran clarifying the reported arrangement, the source emphasised.
